As a teenager, I had severe menstrual cramps every month. The pain was so bad that I often missed a day of school and would lie curled in a ball on the floor of my bedroom. I wish I had grown up being able to use homeopathy for menstrual cramps.

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are a common discomfort for many women. While over-the-counter pain relievers can offer relief, some individuals seek natural alternatives to manage menstrual cramps. Homeopathy is one such approach that has gained popularity for its gentle and holistic approach to women’s health. In this post, I’ll explain how homeopathy can provide natural relief for menstrual cramps, offering you a non-invasive and drug-free option to alleviate discomfort during that time of the month.
Define Menstrual Cramps
Before we delve into how homeopathy can help, let’s first understand what causes menstrual cramps. According to Dr. Mallika Marshall of Harvard Health Publishing, “During a menstrual period, the body releases chemicals called prostaglandins, which stimulate muscles in the uterus to tighten and contract, causing pain in the lower abdomen, back, and thighs. While the pain is usually milder than the contractions felt during childbirth, for some women, menstrual cramps can be severe. Over-the-counter pain relievers and oral contraceptives can help reduce the pain associated with menstrual periods.”
And just like Dr. Marshall said, my only options as a teenager were over-the-counter pain relievers. Eventually, I was prescribed artificial hormones in the form of birth control pills. I want to go on a rant and step on my soapbox about prescribing artificial hormones to young girls that cover up an issue and never actually fix it. I want to say, very loudly, that birth control pills are destroying the health of women, and no one is doing anything about it. If I were to get on my soapbox and rant, I would rant about how women are treated like medical experiments, and I would then say that we, as women, just let it happen. Because we don’t do our own research and we blindly accept whatever medicine they give us. But I won’t rant. And I will stay off my soapbox.
For now…..

What Are Your Red Flags?
At some point, we stopped looking at the symptoms of extreme menstrual cramps as a signal that something was not right in the woman’s body. When the body is in pain, it is a red flag that something is off and should be treated. Menstrual cramps, severe PMS, and heavy bleeding are NOT normal and should be treated. However, they should not be covered up by something that will make the issue worse down the road.
Homeopathy for Menstrual Cramps
Sometimes, menstrual cramps can be a symptom of a deeper issue. If you try one of these remedies for a few months without success, try reaching out to a homeopath for help. There is often this type of dance that comes with prescribing, and there are times you need a tango instructor.
Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that follows the principle of “like cures like.” It involves using highly diluted substances, often derived from plants and minerals, to stimulate the body’s self-healing abilities. In the case of menstrual cramps, homeopathic remedies aim to address the root causes of the discomfort rather than merely masking the pain.
Magnesium phos
Mag phos is the usual go-to homeopathy remedy for menstrual cramps. These cramps are usually in the lower abdomen and feel better from warm applications or pressing on the area. One of my daughters also struggled with monthly cramps. I have a confession. I would give her Mag phos every month…even when it didn’t help. She would get very angry with me when I even suggested it. I don’t blame her! It didn’t help, and I continued to suggest it. Learn from my mistake when the remedy continuously fails to act….change remedies!
Colocynth
Colocynth is recommended for menstrual cramps that are relieved from bending double. There may be a tendency to have heavy periods. These are the women that you will find curled in a ball on the floor.
Sepia
Sepia is very useful for pain with scanty bleeding. it is our go-to for bearing down pain as if the pelvic organs will fall out. It is a wonderful remedy for women with PMS symptoms.
Ipecacuanha
If the pain causes nausea and vomiting, grab the Ipecac. The pains will have a cutting feel and go from the left side to the right side. There may also be heavy bleeding.
Kali carbonicum
Kali carb is for misplaced pains. Instead of feeling the menstrual cramps in the abdomen, you may feel them in the back, thighs, or hips. Sidenote: this remedy is also great for back labor.
Belladonna
Belladonna is wonderful for treating cramps when the pain is worse lying down. There is usually a headache along with heavy bleeding.
Chamomilla
It is for menstrual cramps that come and go in waves like labor pains. There is a lot of pain and irritability. In fact, she may beg for help and then send it away as soon as it arrives.
Conclusion
It’s essential to be patient when using homeopathy, as the effects may not be instantaneous. Results can vary from person to person, and it may take some time to find the right remedy that works for you.
Homeopathy offers a gentle and holistic approach to managing menstrual cramps by addressing the root causes of discomfort.
