Homeopathy has been a beacon of natural healing for centuries, offering a holistic approach to health that resonates with both seasoned practitioners and curious newcomers. When I started learning homeopathy, I immediately wanted to go to school. However, when I saved the money to start homeopathy school, I would need to pay a midwife instead. This happened three times!

Eventually, the timing worked out. Because I was going through school faster than my budget anticipated, I would flip furniture to pay for my classes. I never intended to start a practice. I just wanted the information. But, I love the path I’m on. Having a practice has been a fantastic experience. Choosing the right school is pivotal if you wish to deepen your expertise or are eager to embark on this rewarding journey. In this post, we’ll explore the top homeopathy schools in the U.S. and beyond, their costs, benefits, and drawbacks—plus a fascinating dive into the history of homeopathic education in America.
A Brief History of Homeopathic Colleges in the U.S.
Homeopathy was introduced to the U.S. in 1825 by Hans Burch Gram. The first homeopathic medical school, the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts (Allentown Academy), was founded in Pennsylvania in 1835.
Among many who used homeopathy during this era were Lincoln’s Secretary of State – William Seward, Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Susan B. Anthony, Florence Nightingale, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Claude Monet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Darwin, William James, and many more. Mark Twain wrote, “The introduction of homeopathy forced the old school doctor to stir around and learn something of a rational nature about his business.”
One of the facts that made homeopathy schools stand out at the time was that they were the only medical schools to allow both women and men of color to attend. By the late 19th century, there were over 20 homeopathic colleges and numerous hospitals nationwide.
5 Homeopathy Schools: Costs and Reviews
Lotus Wellness Institute
This is my alma mater. I chose it because of its founder, the late Robin Murphy, the cost, and the time involved. I had seven children at home whom I was homeschooling, so I needed something that fit into my schedule, not the other way around. As a Christian, I did have to gloss over some of the information about topics other than homeopathy. Unfortunately, there are no Christian homeopathy schools.
There are three programs at the Lotus Wellness Institute, formerly the Hahnemann Academy of North America. The Home Use Program consists of 60 classroom hours and costs $1,178. The Integrative Homeopathy program is 100 hours plus clinical hours and costs $3,262. Finally, the Clinical Homeopathy program has 500 hours of classroom lectures plus clincials, costing $4,723. It is flexible online learning with self-paced modules. It integrates some naturopathic approaches and allows you to “bundle and save” options for reduced costs. A downside to this school is that there are limited live interactions compared to other schools, and it is best suited to those comfortable with independent learning. That worked for me as I studied independently for almost 20 years.
New York School of Homeopathy (NYSH)
The New York School of Homeopathy, established in 1990, is the oldest continuously operating homeopathy school in the United States. It costs $4,200 annually (or $4,600 with installment plans). This school offers live online classes with interactive mentorship from experienced instructors. They also have a comprehensive curriculum covering acute remedies to advanced clinical work. This school requires a significant commitment of time for live sessions.
International Academy of Classical Homeopathy (IACH)
The International Academy of Classical Homeopathy was founded by George Vithoulkas, a globally renowned figure in classical homeopathy. The school focuses on Hahnemannian principles with rigorous case analysis and management training. Graduates have an internationally recognized certification. This program is intensive, and it might be overwhelming for beginners. The cost is $2,700-$3,200 annually.
Academy of Homeopathy Education (AHE)
The Academy of Homeopathy Education is a newer face in homeopathy schools. It offers both part-time and full-time programs. There is a strong emphasis on clinical practice through supervised cases, and the Accreditation Commission accredits it for Homeopathic Education in North America. The cons of this school are that the tuition fees are higher than those of other programs ($6,000 annually) and that certification requires significant clinical hours. AHE does run low-cost acute and chronic care clinics. One of my daughters is being seen by a student from this school.
Centre for Homeopathic Education (CHE)
The Centre for Homeopathic Education is located in England and costs approximately $3,200-$3,400 annually. It offers both online and attendance-based courses with flexible learning options. The costs do not include supervision or the required textbooks. I have a membership with CHE and I enjoy it. They offer many classes and sessions you can attend even if you are not a full-time student.
Choosing Your Path: Pros and Cons of Each School
School | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|
Lotus Wellness | Affordable, integrates multiple modalities, self-paced | Limited live interaction, independent learning required |
NYSH | Oldest U.S. school, interactive mentorship, comprehensive curriculum | Higher tuition, time-intensive |
IACH | Globally recognized, rigorous classical training | Based abroad, an intensive workload |
AHE | Flexible schedules, accredited, strong clinical focus | Expensive, high clinical hour requirements |
CHE | Affordable, integrates multiple modalities, and self-paced | Additional costs for books/supervision |
