Public school has already started where I live. We homeschool and this is my 22nd year! I have graduated 3 amazing kids and my oldest at home is now a senior. Wherever your children get their education, they sometimes need back-to-school help. Usually, this help is for those who are transitioning to a new environment like a new school. Or maybe a new situation with riding a bus or going to a homeschool co-op for the first time. The symptoms can look like anxiety, worries, or even nightmares.

Homeopathy for Back-to-School Help
Homeopathy is a gentle, safe, non-toxic way to help bring about balance within the child’s (or mom’s) nervous system. Each remedy has it’s own unique makeup of physical and mental/emotional symptoms. If you or your child is experiencing uncomplicated back-to-school worries or simple sleeplessness issues, you might try one of the following remedies. However, if the symptoms are deeper or long-term, consider the help of a homeopath. Additionally, if you are already working with a homeopath, please consult them before adding or changing remedies
Arsenicum album
Before school starts, children who need this remedy will make sure they have everything in order. All their supplies will be ready and their room will be neat and tidy. In addition to their supplies being ready, they will even lay out their clothes the night before. Anything that stands in the way of being fully prepared will cause them great anxiety.
Consenquently, the child is detail oriented about their schoolwork and get anxious if things are not just so. They can have OCD tendencies. They like to keep themselves busy because it helps with their restlessness. Their sleep can be restless, too, tossing and turning, thinking, “I will never fall asleep.” Of course, making the restlessness worse. The child will feel better with company. Additionally, they may have an anxious stomach with a burning sensation that is made better by heat.
Calc carb
Children who need this remedy can’t sleep because of worry – school, or strong fear of the unknown. Not only that, but they are anxious about their own safety and the security of their family and home. This child is responsible, with a strong sense of duty. They like company and want to feel like they can rely on others for support. While away from home they may not show that worry because they don’t want others to think they are fearful. The child wants their school supplies ready and will ask for reassurance that they have the right items. Conflict is especially upsetting. At lunchtime, they will want eggs and sweets. Sad stories are upsetting and TV can give them nightmares. Physically, they may be constipated, sweat from the head or have bone issues.
Lycopodium
Those who fit this remedy may be shy away from home but more domineering at home. They are anxious at the start of school or outside classes because they don’t yet know the lay of the land. Meeting new people will make them particularly nervous. They may present themselves as confident but feel insecure about their intelligence. Winning is very important as they are ambitious. At lunchtime, they prefer sweets because they have a huge craving for sugar. Physically, they can have indigestion and be quite gassy.
Nux vomica
Children who fit this remedy will wake early on the first day, waiting impatiently for school. Being on time is important to them. They aim to be perfect at everything and get frustrated when anyone interferes with their goals. This child is a high achiever and does well. In an older student, you might see a real go-getter who stays up late drinking coffee to finish assignments. They get agitated when they are interrupted. This child may have behavioral issues that involve hitting and kicking. On a test, they will want to do the best, get the highest grade and won’t be shy about stating this. They work hard and play hard. If they make their own lunch, you might find spicy or fried foods. Physically, they may complain of stomach cramps or indigestion. They can overdo and often catch a cold from doing too much.

Phosphorus
Children who fit this remedy are bubbly and outgoing, excited to be among friends. They don’t like to be alone. They are affectionate and seek company. With their charming personality, they attract attention. This child is sensitive and can be affected by the feeling of others in the room. Creative and carefree, they do not study as much as other students, but they’re are just as smart. At lunchtime you will find them with cold drinks and if it is possible, ice cream. Their moods are changeable, going from shy to timid to very irritable. They feel left out easily, and their feelings get hurt by their friends’ neglect. You will find them outside playing in the fresh air. They are not generally thirsty. For lunch they will most likely have something that includes bread, maybe even with butter. Physically, they are prone to ear infections and nasal discharge that is yellowish-green and thick.
Sulphur
Children who fit this remedy are not likely to be nervous before school starts. They often look disheveled, with mismatched socks and uncombed hair, which doesn’t bother them one bit, although it drives mom crazy! They are hot and may have smelly feet. As students, they are bright, curious, and philosophical in their comments. They can be leaders, yet they can be lazy as well. Before tests, they are not likely to be nervous because they are confident in their knowledge. They are not concerned about getting it all right because they assume that the answers may be wrong or the question unfair. They love the limelight and do not shy away from being the center of attention-in fact, they prefer it. At lunchtime they ask for chocolate and fatty foods. Physically, they may have issues with their skin, such as eczema, molluscum contagiosum or rashes that are red, hot and itchy.

Conclusion
As parents, it is hard to watch as our children struggle. While it is important for kids to learn to regulate and control themselves, some may need a little help along the way. That’s one reason I love homeopathy so much. It doesn’t dampen the child’s spirit leaving them little zombies. The remedies merely bring about balance and help the child.
