Neck pain is the second most common muscular complaint after low back pain. Not only is the neck susceptible to injury, but it is also a magnet for tension. There is a long list of effective homeopathic remedies for neck pain. I will give you the key players. However, these remedies do not necessarily cover injuries like whiplash.
Homeopathic remedies for neck pain have an anti-inflammatory action, stimulate repair and healing of ligaments and nerves, and change underlying patterns of muscle tension. Moreover, the emotional component of these remedies can help change our reactions and how we deal with ongoing stress.
Going Back To School
We are fearfully and wonderfully made, including the neck area. The anatomy and movement of the neck are complex. Unfortunately, mobility in the neck area can affect its stability. This can result from injury, poor posture, and chronic tension. Additionally, the overwhelming sensory and emotional overload we experience daily translates into stiffness and spasticity in the neck and shoulder area. This wear and tear makes the neck a prime site for arthritis and disc problems. Any of these can cause pain to radiate down the arm, up the head, around the chest, or down the back. I’m a huge advocate for good chiropractic care. Find you a good chiropractor!
Homeopathic Remedies for Neck Pain
Of the remedies listed below, Bryonia, Kalmia, and Gelsemium are the most effective for acute neck pain conditions. Meaning that the pain is short-lived and self-limiting. Causticum is the most chronic. Meaning it is ongoing forever with no relief. If you have had chronic pain, please find a good homeopath. They will help you unravel the root cause and help you find true healing.
Bryonia
Bryonia has stitching pains in the nape of the neck and shoulders. The pain can be described at hot and swollen with painful stiffness. It may radiate to the shoulder or arm. Bryonia is the remedy when the pain is worse from any movement and better when resting.
Calc phos
Calc phos is for drawing pain and stiffness from the last draft. It’s like if a fan or vent is blowing directly on you. There is shooting pain in small, local spots. There may be cramping on one side, then the other. The pain is worse from wind or drafts and better from warmth.
Causticum
Causticum is when the neck feels contracted with stiff tendons and muscles. The neck joints need to be stretched and cracked. The pain is tearing, burning, or raw. There is chronic mental stress and suffering. Causticum is worse from dry wind but better from damp weather.
Chelidonium
Chelidonium is a potent liver repair remedy. Pain may be felt in the right shoulder, shoulder blade, arm, or wrist. Tension and heaviness can even draw the head to the right.
Cimicifuga
Cimicifuga has radiating, electric-like pains that shoot into the left arm. There is stiffness and heaviness. The upper spine is sensitive to the touch, with spasms of large muscles. The person is restless, sad, talkative, and feels like they are going insane.
Gelsemium
Gelsemium is for a sore, tender, and stiff neck with an accompanying headache in the back of the head. The person is dull, lethargic, and weak. They are worse with motion but better when lying with their head raised.
Kalmia
Kalmia is for sudden sharp pains that shoot into the face, head, back, or shoulders. There may be pain in the arms. The fingers may have numbness, tingling, or a crawling sensation. The person may have palpitations or chest pain. They are worse from cold but better from heat and pressure.
How Often?
When the pain is severe and the person is suffering, remedies should be used frequently. They can be as often as every 15 minutes for an hour. Then, space them out to every hour for a few hours. In more chronic conditions, you would want to use low potencies once or twice a day. Again, I suggest hiring a professional homeopath to help you figure out the best way to do this. HERE, I wrote about how often to give remedies and when to change to a different remedy.
