Along with most of my children, I am very sensitive to motion sickness. Way back when I only had three little girls, I drove the four of us all over Texas and Arkansas. I knew where the girls could have a drink on the drive, so we would stop at the “nice” bathrooms along the way. I knew what types of snacks they liked and what was the best entertainment for three girls under 6! But, one thing I never learned was the homeopathic remedies for motion sickness.
We tried all sorts of adjustments to the time we woke up, the type of breakfast we ate, what they did in the car, etc. I never found the right combination. I tried the OTC motion sickness medication (this was before I knew about homeopathy), but it completely knocked them out for hours! While that made for a quiet drive, I wanted to travel with my children, not drug them out! I tried natural remedies, but they didn’t seem to work either. Motion sickness wasn’t something that had an external cause but an internal one.
So You’re Saying It’s all in My Head
Although it feels like the action is happening in your stomach, the mechanism of the nausea and dizziness originates in the inner ear and specific areas of your brain.
Motion sickness occurs when there’s a disconnect between the visual and vestibular (inner ear) signals sent to the brain. This mismatch confuses the brain, leading to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, and a general feeling of unease. Common triggers include:
- Travel by Car: Frequent starts, stops, and winding roads can disrupt the body’s balance.
- Sea Travel: The constant rocking motion of a boat or ship can cause significant discomfort for those sensitive to motion.
- Air Travel: Turbulence and changes in altitude can contribute to motion sickness.
- Virtual Reality: The sensory conflict between what is seen in VR and what the body feels can also trigger motion sickness.
Homeopathic Remedies for Motion Sickness
Though there are medical anti-nausea drugs, homeopathic remedies are generally fast-acting, effective, and without side effects. Using the remedies may also reduce the tendency towards this condition and ultimately eliminate recurrences. If a remedy has been found effective for an individual in the past, it can be used as a preventive before an expected journey. It can be taken up to two days before a trip in a 30c potency and right before travel.
Cocculus Indicus is the most common motion sickness remedy and is also effective as a preventive measure. Nausea and dizziness are caused by motion or loss of sleep. There is an empty, hollow feeling in the stomach. The person feels dazed and wants to be left alone.
Nux Vomica is for nausea, queasy stomach, and an urge to vomit due to overindulgence in food or drink.
Tabacum is for constant nausea on the slightest motion with a cold, clammy feeling. There may be sudden anxiety that is better from weeping.
Petroleum is used for nausea, dizziness, and the accumulation of saliva in the mouth. When vomiting occurs, it is a green, bitter fluid. The peculiar thing about the Petroleum remedy for nausea is that it is better when eating.
Borax is excellent for motion sickness in children. It is specifically for nausea caused by a downward motion, such as the descent in air travel.
Bryonia is used for nausea and vomiting caused by the slightest motion. It works well for nausea caused by cars, boats, and looking at moving objects.
Sepia should be considered for motion sickness with hormonal disturbances like PMS, menses, menopause, or pregnancy. There is a weak, empty feeling in the pit of the stomach with dizziness, exhaustion, and chilliness.
Nausea By Any Other Name is Still Nausea
While typing up this list, I kept thinking of morning sickness, which I wrote about HERE. These symptoms all sound like that tough season some women go through. Here’s a beautiful thing about homeopathy: Symptoms are king! Whether your nausea is from riding in a car or pregnancy’s glow doesn’t matter. If the symptom picture fits you, take the remedy.
Conclusion
Motion sickness can be disruptive during travel, but with the proper homeopathic remedies, you can find natural relief from nausea, dizziness, and discomfort. Whether traveling by car, sea, or air, homeopathy offers safe and effective options to help you enjoy a smoother, more pleasant journey.
