“Babies come when they are ready.” as they say. And they’re not wrong. Unborn babies excrete a hormone that will lead to uterine contractions that lead to labor. But I have come to learn that sometimes, women’s bodies might need a little bit of help to keep those contractions going. Can homeopathy be a natural labor induction? Sorta. Homeopathy will help bring about balance in the body. Homeopathy will do just that if the body needs a minute tweak or nudge to get into that balance.
This is me, eating crow
Here in the South, we often pray that our words will be sweet; tomorrow, we may have to eat them. I have long been known to say that inductions are harmful to babies and mothers, that we need to let the body do its job, and that we need to let the body do its job. I have encouraged women to “Wait and let that baby tell you when it’s ready.” Honestly, it’s not bad advice. Babies will come out. You won’t be pregnant forever. It just feels that way. Additionally, I have seen homeopathy assist labor several times.
Can Homeopathy be a Natural Labor Induction?
Kinda. Homeopathy will only help if all the pieces are there and a slight nudge is needed in the right place. It will not cause labor before a due date. You can take all the remedies and do all the things, but nothing will happen. In fact, the same remedy that I use to help my daughters’ contractions get more robust and more consistent is the same one that I recommend to a woman who thought she was miscarrying. (She did not miscarry! Glory to God!)
That being said, the homeopathic remedy Caulophyllum made a vast difference in my daughter’s recent labor and delivery. Every time I gave it to her, she had a contraction. I alternated it with Cimicifuga to help her labor get out of prodromal labor and move to a more consistent labor pattern.
How do I use it?
Some homeopaths recommend using Calulphyllum and Cimicifuga once a day from 37 weeks until labor. Others say to wait until labor starts and alternate them reasonably close together. I tried both ways in my pregnancies and found the second method more efficient. That is how I treated the births I have attended as a homeopath. These two remedies are also helpful for after-birth pains. Again, alternate them back and forth as the pains come on.
Overdue, Now What?
Those who are not pregnant will tell women whose due dates have passed that due dates are subjective. We will pat a very pregnant mama on the hand and sweetly tell her that those are called “estimated” for a reason. Can I offer some advice? Don’t tell a pregnant woman who is at her due date or past it any of what you just read. She doesn’t want to hear it. She doesn’t care that it’s an estimate. At this point in her life, this is a blood oath, and someone lied. And she’s not having it.
One of my old Homeopathy Today magazines from the National Center for Homeopathy offered this recipe for overdue babies. I have used this recipe with mixed results. About 50% went into labor right after taking the remedies.
This protocol is only to be taken after the due date has passed. I’m looking at you, Mama, who isn’t due for another week but is miserable. Stand down. You need to wait.
Calc carb 30c, one dose each hour for 3 hours in the morning. Followed at 11 P.M. by Caulophyllum 200c, then followed at 11:30 P.M. by one dose of Gelsemium 200c. According to the author David Needleman, he found this very successful as the waters usually break between 3 and 4 A.M. If the water doesn’t break, he recommends waiting 24 hours and repeating.
Labor and Delivery Homeopath
I think I may have created a new title, and I’m not upset about it. I have been blessed to attend more labor and deliveries. Homeopathy just works so well with labor and delivery! It is non-toxic, so I am able to give it to babies soon after birth. I love observing the mother and seeing what remedy she needs and when. Add to that another opportunity to share homeopathy with anyone who will listen!
