Remedies for Earaches

One of my 9 children has struggled with chronic earaches. In addition, I have helped many a mom whose little ones were suffering with them. Homeopathy offers several remedies to treat earaches that are far superior to any other medication. We have successfully treated earaches with zero side effects!

What causes earaches?

Ear infections are one of the main causes of earaches. An infection can be either bacterial or viral and is usually in the middle ear, behind the ear drum. Usually, it happens along with a cold or flu when the eustachian tube fills with infected fluid.

Sometimes the infection is of the outer ear and is also known as swimmer’s ear. This occurs when water is trapped in the ear and this environment is rich for bacterial growth. Another case of pain in the outer ear is from impacted or dry ear wax or even a foreign object stuck in the ear. The use of earbuds can cause earwax to be pushed down and pressed together. Depending on how deep they fit in the ears they can also scratch the inside of the ear canal. Using cotton swabs to “clean” the ear can actually have the inverse effect. The ear is self-cleaning and doesn’t need your help.

Other times the cause of an earache is due to secondary causes such as dental issues, sinus infections, sore throat, or even TMJ.

What Other Signs And Symptoms May Occur?

Depending on the cause, pain in the ears may have other symptoms such as ear discharge, hearing loss, fullness in ears, noises in ears, clicking or popping in ears, redness/swelling of ears, eruptions on ears, fever, headache, and jaw pain. In children and babies, pulling the ear, irritability, excessive crying, and loss of appetite may be felt.

Remedies for Earaches

• Aconite – This remedy is best used within the first 24 hours of the onset of pain. It is also the go-to remedy after exposure to cold, dry wind.
• Belladonna – This remedy is best used when the outer ear and the side of the face are bright red. There is usually a high fever with glassy eyes. Belladonna is a great pain reliever. I wrote all about it here – Belladonna-The Drama Queen – Emily Frye Homeopathy.
• Chamomilla – I often go to this remedy first with earaches. There is a great sensitivity to pain and irritability, and it may be worse when teething. One keynote with this remedy for earaches or fever is one cheek will be red while the other will be pale.
• Hepar sulph – If Chamomilla fails to act, this is next in the line-up. The pain here is sharper and there may be discharge from the ear. Also, the pain is worse when swallowing.
• Kali mur – Our #1 remedy for draining the ear canal. If the earache is caused by a backup fluid behind the eardrum Kali mur 30c will drain it quickly.
• Merc sol – When there are chronic ear infections and a past history of antibiotics, Merc will help to resolve them. This earache will be accompanied by drooling and swollen glands.
• Pulsatilla – This is one of the top 5 remedies for earaches. This earache has lots of whining and crying. They are afraid to be left alone and are not thirsty. And you just feel so sorry for them!
• Silica – If there is a pain when swallowing or if it feels like the ear canal is glued shut. If there is impacted wax, this will also help to draw it out.

That time I thought I was dying

In my home, these remedies for earaches have been invaluable. I have used them on babies, toddlers, 18-year-olds, and even myself. I once had such an earache from which I was convinced I was going to die. My daughter took me to urgent care so I could prove it and could start saying goodbye to my loved ones. The doctor looked into my ear and said, “Well, yes. It is a little red.” Um, sir, little? I. am. dying. I knew immediately that I needed Chamomilla. If my ear was a “little” red and I was in that much pain, I must be hypersensitive. Two doses later, I felt so much better! I put the funeral plans on hold and moved on.
