Here in the South, spring has sprung! All the crepe myrtles are spouting green leaves and the azaleas are gorgeous pink, red, and purple! Consequently, with all this color comes yellow pollen, the dreaded hay fever, and seasonal allergies. With modern medicine, we are offered very little in the way to ease the suffering from hay fever. Of course, homeopathy has remedies for seasonal allergies that can help!

The symptoms of hay fever and allergies vary but they include itchy, watery eyes, a tickly throat, and a stuffy, runny nose. Additionally, the fatigue and “wiped out” feeling can at times be the worst symptom of all.
What are my options?
According to Yalemedicine.com, the best treatment for seasonal allergies is “over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines help [that] suppress the body’s immune response, providing relief from symptoms. Decongestants can be used to relieve congestion. Over-the-counter cough medications are commonly recommended as well.” Even worse, they recommend allergy shots. Why do I say, “even worse”? Unfortunately, allergy shots are basically weekly vaccinations. While I understand the concept of them (not too much different than homeopathy), it’s the extra ingredients, the amount of the allergen in the shot, and the fact that it’s injected into the muscle, bypassing the protective digestion track that we need to worry about. However, with homeopathy, we don’t work against the immune system God gave our bodies. Homeopathy works within it to heal and cure.
Remedies to Heal
While homeopathy has many remedies for seasonal allergies, here are my Top 10:
- Allium cepa – There is watery, bland discharge from the eyes that runs like a faucet. The eyelids are red and the eyes are sensitive to light. The nasal discharge burns the nose and upper lip leaving them bright red and raw. There may be itching in the ear canal.
- Ambrosia – This remedy is made from ragweed. If you know you are allergic to ragweed, be sure to have this one on hand. The eyes will be red and watery along with burning and itching. The nose will be congested with watery discharge. The head and nose will feel stuffed up and there may be a wheezy cough.
- Euphrasia – This remedy is the opposite of Allium in that the eyes are the ones with the acrid discharge that burns and leaves the surrounding skin red and raw. The eyes feel like they have sand or grit in them which causes the eyes to burn and feel dried out. There might be a sinus headache with pressure behind the eyes.
- Gelsemium – With this remedy the person feels like they may have the flu or a cold. They may have chills up and down their spine with a dull frontal headache. They will have a wiped-out feeling with blocked ears and a tingling in the nose.
- Histaminum – I like to think of this one as a homeopathic version of Benedryl. The eyes feel as if there is a foreign body in them and the edge of the eyelids are red. The headache makes the head feel heavy with pain at the temples and the nape of the neck. The lungs feel oppressed and constricted with choking coughing fits. Additionally, there may be a constant tickle in the back of the throat. Inside the nose may have a painful dryness as well as a feeling of being blocked on one or both sides.
- Kali bic – The #1 symptom to look for with this remedy is watery discharge that changes to ropey, sticky, yellow mucus. There is pinching, pressure, and pain across the root of the nose. In addition to lots and lots of boogers. Look for a loss of smell and violent sneezing with bloody discharges. This is a great remedy for non-specific sniffles in children.
- Nat mur – This is a major remedy for allergies. They have a nose that runs like a faucet and then dries up. Along with everything else feeling dry; skin, lips, eyes, and all mucus membranes. There may be a loss of smell and taste and the headache feels like a hammering or bursting pain.
- Sabadilla – If you stop to smell the roses and those allergies hit back, this is the remedy you need. The symptoms needing Sabadilla are worse from smelling flowers. The symptoms include itching in the nose and soft palate, violent sneezing, copious amounts of watery nasal mucus, and a painful, muffled cough.
- Sticta – This remedy is better in the morning, but the allergy symptoms get worse as the day progresses and the person is worse at night. There is severe dryness in the mucus membranes with a constant need to blow their nose.
- Wyethia – This remedy is a nonspecific remedy for hay fever. Meaning, if you have hay fever you need this remedy. There is violent sneezing, profuse mucus, dryness in the back of the throat, and a swollen uvula with the constant need to swallow. Additionally, there may be itching in the back of the nose, throat, soft palate, and even the ears. And sadly, this one, too, is worse around flowers.

When the cure is worse than the disease
With homeopathy, there are no unwanted side effects. Taking remedies for seasonal allergies will alleviate the suffering. The side effects of a popular OTC allergy medication that starts with a Z and ends with “yrtec” are drowsiness, fatigue, tired feeling, dizziness, dry mouth, sore throat, cough, nausea, constipation, or headaches. The side effects in children are all the above plus stomach pain and vomiting. We can do better. When the medication needs medication to deal with the side effects, we should do better.
I have seen allergies improve every season using homeopathy. The first season it’s a lot of taking the remedies and feeling relief, the next season the allergies are lessened and fewer remedies are needed. Usually, by the third season, few remedies are needed and the person almost forgets the suffering they used to endure.
