You know I’m a big fan of planning and having the remedies on hand for when situations arise. Now, I am not saying you should drink too much alcohol on the upcoming New Year’s Eve. And I know none of y’all would ever do such a thing. My Baptist preacher husband didn’t like the idea of a blog post about hangovers. I am not encouraging drinking too much alcohol. However, if you have a friend who drinks too much alcohol, you’ll know how to help them out.

Dangers of Too Much Alcohol
I grew up in the “Just Say No” era and in a small Texas town where underage drinking was common. I think I’ve had a lifetime of lectures about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol. This will be a lecture-free blog post. Sorta. Maybe more like lecture-lite.
According to the CDC, the short-term health risks include “injuries, such as motor vehicle crashes, falls, drownings, and burns; violence, including homicide, suicide, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence; alcohol poisoning, a medical emergency that results from high blood alcohol levels; risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners. These behaviors can result in unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV; miscarriage and stillbirth, or fetal alcohol disorder among pregnant women.”
What Does it Do to My Body?
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcohol can take a serious toll on your health, even moderate drinking. It interferes with the brain, heart, liver, and pancreas. Drinking too much can weaken your immune system as well. Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your body’s ability to ward off infections even up to 24 hours after getting drunk.
Homeopathy to the Rescue!
So, let’s say your friend has too much to drink and calls you up asking for help. First, give them the lecture-lite about drinking too much and the sin of covetous drinking (i.e., drunkenness). Then, look to these remedies to see what symptoms match.
- Nux vomica – number one remedy for a hangover with a headache. Irritability is an accompanying symptom. Stomach pain can go along with the headache.
- Arsenic alb – the go-to for a hangover with nausea and vomiting. The vomit may be clear or green in color. Any food or water is immediately vomited. There may be burning in the stomach. Even the sight or smell of food is too much.
- Gelsemium – the first remedy for a hangover accompanied by dizziness or lightheadedness. The friend will complain about the room spinning around him or her. Walking is tough and they may have double vision.

Joking Aside
Drinking too much is never a good idea. As I hoped I proved above, it can cause all sorts of problems. Even though homeopathy will help ease the suffering that goes with a hangover, I pray you will have no reason to need it. You or your friend.
