Flu season starts about when you start seeing commercials for the flu vaccine. Additionally, I tell people that flu season runs from Halloween to Valentine’s Day. This is due to the sugar that is usually consumed during this time. There are several options for flu prevention. Both are maybes; both are inexpensive and will lessen the flu’s effects if you get it. One may or may not give you the flu. One is full of questionable ingredients. The other is homeopathy. Due to this, there is a growing interest in complementary alternative medicines like homeopathy for flu prevention.
According to the CDC website, “The overall burden of influenza (flu) for the 2021-2022 season [in the United States] was an estimated 9.4 million flu illnesses, 4.3 million flu-related medical visits, 100,000 flu-related hospitalizations, and 4,900 flu deaths.” Can we look at that number for a minute? 4.3 MILLION flu-related medical visits? Do any math people out there want to estimate the amount of money we’re talking about here?
Homeopathic Remedies for Flu Prevention:
Last year, I taught a study group on “Getting Ready for Flu Season.” I spent time looking up flu prevention protocols written by other homeopaths. These are what I consider celebrities. Please forgive my mild fangirling here.
- One month before flu season (usually when the media starts to push the flu vaccine), take one dose of Influenzinum 30c once per week for four weeks. Skip the 5th week and take one more dose in the 6th week. Then, take one dose a month for the entire flu season. If, despite this, you still get the flu, take one dose of Influenzinum 30c, followed by the indicated remedy in the case. – Sandra J. Perko, Ph.D., C.C.N.
- Oscillococcinum (the only truly unpronounceable remedy in our Materia Medica!) is useful when you know you have been exposed but have no symptoms or right at the very beginning of feeling ill but before identifiable symptoms have developed. Take two or three doses 4-8 hours apart and hope for the best. – Miranda Castro, FSHom.
- Aconite and Ferrum Phos were frequently given at the early onset of fever and aches to prevent influenza. – Stephen Cummings, F.N.P. and Dana Ullman, M.P.H.
- Oscillococcinum 200 – To prevent influenza over a long period, prescribe one dose per week during winter. Over a short period, have the patient take one [dose] as soon as he feels the first symptoms: shivering stiffness, early stages of coryza. Clinically, this remedy has a remarkable antiviral effect, no doubt, because the numerous amino acids contained in the base substance are rich in DNA and RNA. It may be used preventively (over a long or short period) and curatively. – Jacques Jouanny, M.D.
- Oscillococcinum – Best to give at the first onset of the flu; anxiety, pale, shivering, fixed obsessional ideas; obstinacy; washes hands often; fears storms; oculonasal discharge; nasal obstruction and sneezing; serous to mucopurulent discharge; pain in frontal sinuses; dry irritating cough; piercing pain both ears with decreased hearing. – Tomas Kruzel, N.D.
- Camphora – This remedy is often sufficient at the onset to cut short an attack or at least modify the severity. The stage of chill persists. – Samuel Lilienthal, M.D.
- After contact with someone sick with the flu, homeopaths recommend Gelsemium 30, three doses over a twenty-four hour period, to help prevent infection. – Michael Weiner, Ph. D.
How Homeopathy Works for Flu Prevention
Homeopathy is highly diluted. So much so that when it is introduced into the body, the body works hard to figure it out. This acts like a map to stimulate the body’s immune system to heal and reduce susceptibility to the flu virus. You can see that there are several protocols, and they’re all different. I know this can be frustrating to some. These are the “just give me the facts and nothing but the facts” people. But homeopathy is also a bit of an art. Here’s the truth, they all work. Just pick one and go with it. These homeopaths have found that this is what works in their practice. There are several factors in this truth—location, clients’ age, homeopath’s personal preference, etc.
Something to Consider
I personally don’t take remedies for something I don’t have. Meaning I take my risks, and if I get the flu, I treat the symptoms. However, many people do use homeopathy to prevent the flu, and they feel it really helps. I wanted you to have this information. Follow you’re own conscience.
There are some actions you can take to limit your chances of getting the flu even when exposed—things like limiting sugar intake. Sugar suppresses the immune system for hours after eating. Also, try to get outside daily even if the weather is less than ideal.
Conclusion
Using homeopathy for flu prevention is easy and inexpensive. You can easily find Oscillo in most grocery stores and has zero side effects, unlike other forms of prevention. It is important that you make informed decisions and consult a homeopath if you are concerned.

Ferrum phos and aconite worked like magic when my youngest woke up from a nap with glassy eyes and a warm forehead! (I can’t be bothered to keep track of a thermometer but I know he was warm 😂) I gave him three doses as the night went on and each time I could visibly tell a difference in his countenance and demeanor.
