I have written before about using cell (or tissue) salts. But I have never taken the time to explain precisely what cell salts are! These 12 remedies are jewels in our homeopathic medicine cabinet and are a wonderful place to start with homeopathy if you’re overwhelmed by the 3,000 remedies. You can use only them in your home to treat many acute illnesses. Cell salts have been called homeopathic vitamins, homeopathic building blocks, and mico-dose minerals. Dr. Jayne Marquis describes them as “To the body, what really rich fertilized soil is to a plant.”

Tell Me, What are Cell Salts?
The cell salts comprise 12 homeopathically prepared minerals and mineral salts. They are the inorganic building blocks that make up the material basis of the human body. In other words, the physical structure of our bodies boils down, in essence, to these 12 principal components in various combinations and states. (This is a slight oversimplification, of course, but it helps understand the concept of the function of the cell salts.)
When the human body is cremated after death, the ashes are made up in large part of these 12 inorganic materials. This is how Dr. Schuessler discovered the cell salts and began theorizing about their importance in maintaining health – by analyzing cremated remains. He studied the ashes of cremated bodies to analyze their chemical properties and began to correlate certain mineral deficiencies with patterns of ill health. From there, he created the system of cell salts we have today, where we know which cell salts support what types of mineral imbalances and the symptoms of those imbalances.
These remedies are called cell salts because they rebalance the body’s functioning at the cell’s level. They support the body in creating health, beginning at this elementary level. The potency of cell salts is always a 6X or 12X. They are often thought of as micro-dosing of minerals. In some ways, this can be considered a fundamental building block potency to match the targeted reception level – the cell or the basic building block of our physical structure. These same 12 remedies are available in higher potencies, so we refer to them as homeopathic remedies rather than cell salts.
Usage and Healing Properties
Cell salts are used in homeopathy as a way to restore balance and support the body’s natural healing process. They are believed to address many physical and emotional conditions by replenishing the body with the necessary minerals in a highly bioavailable form. Each of the 12 cell salts corresponds to specific minerals and is associated with particular bodily functions and organs.

More Education, Please
I love homeopathy books! Here are some great books about cell salts:
Homeopathic Cell Salt Remedies: Healing with Nature’s Twelve Mineral Compounds – This book is excellent for beginners. It has simple-to-understand chapters and is a great reference.
Facial Diagnosis of Cell Salt Deficiencies: A User’s Guide – This book is wonderful with many color photos that help educate about what to look for when learning what cell salt to use. Word of advice from a Christian perspective: The book has astrological charts about each cell salt. I found the book informative when I stuck to the facts. I ignored the junk about the star charts.
Berkowsky’s Synthesis Materia Medica of the Twelve Cell Salts – This is a textbook for the more serious homeopathy students. I don’t own this one….yet, but, rest assured it is now on my list!
Where to Buy?
I love Hyland’s brand for several reasons. First, they are easy to find at health food stores. Two, they are inexpensive. But my local Sprouts isn’t carrying all 12 anymore. No one knows why. I finally decided to get a kit so I wouldn’t run to Sprouts every time I wanted another cell salt.
So, I ended up with THIS kit from Amazon. I am delighted with it. The bottles are larger than the new Hyland’s bottles. However, my children said they don’t taste as good as Hyland’s. I’m okay with that.
Conclusion
I will be posting more about cell salts in the future. Now that you know what they are and why they are so lovely, I hope you will start using cell salts regularly as a family healer.
